What causes dulling and discoloration of teeth?
Discolorations can be caused by staining, aging, or chemical damage to teeth. Tooth dullness or staining is an indication that whitening should be considered. Smokers and those who drink coffee and/or tea on a regular basis accelerate the discoloration and require cleaning more often. This is among the most common reasons for teeth whitening. Teeth whitening is usually the first solution to try due to its lower cost.

Will my teeth be sensitive if I bleach them?
Rarely, but if during the bleaching procedure sensitivity is noticed, we can lower the strength of the bleaching gel and this usually disappears.

How long will the results of cosmetic bleaching last?
With bleaching trays you can "touchup" whenever you wish. So before that reunion, or wedding use your bleaching for a few days to get a bright white smile!

What is the long term affect on my teeth if I choose a cosmetic procedure?
The results vary depending on which treatment you choose. Bleaching needs to be "touched up" about every three months where as veneers or crowns are permanent. Call our office to have Dr. Rudy Hajji evaluate the best treatment for you.

Why do I need a bridge?
Your appearance and proper functioning of your mouth are all important reasons for wearing a bridge. It replaces missing teeth, and supports your facial muscles, lips, and cheeks. It prevents your teeth from shifting and causing bite, jaw and gum problems.

Why do I need a crown?
You may need a crown for several reasons: fractured or broken teeth, large restorations or fillings, teeth that become brittle after root canal treatment, unsightly stains and/or trauma.

What is a crown?
A crown or cap is like a thimble or hollow tooth that is bonded with tooth colored porcelain. The crown is permanently cemented over a prepared tooth to restore natural function and esthetics.

What are the benefits of a removable partial or complete denture?
A partial or complete denture helps you properly eat and speak - two things most people take for granted until their natural teeth are prematurely lost. They also prevent your face from sagging or sinking in by giving support to your lips, cheeks, and facial muscles. This helps a person feel younger and more confident.

Is it important to have your wisdom teeth or third molars removed?
If the third molars or wisdom teeth are not going to erupt or come into the mouth, it is best that they be removed. It is best to have them removed between the ages of 16 and 23. This prevents the development of later problems and possibly a more difficult surgery due to increased bone density and root development.

Should I have an ulcer or growth checked?
Any growth or ulcer, which does not heal itself within 10 days should be checked. It could be pre-cancerous or malignant. Rapid and early diagnosis and treatment offers an excellent prognosis.

If my gums are receding, am I brushing too hard?
A toothbrush does not usually cause receding gums. Gums that have receded are almost always a symptom of a problem with the bite. Sometimes habits such as clenching or grinding your teeth can cause recession. An examination by Dr. Hajji can determine why your gums are receding and preventative measures can be recommended.

How does daily mechanical tongue scrapers enhance fresh
breath and improve health?

Fresh breath can be achieved through daily use of a tongue scraper
and anti-bacterial gel to remove decomposed food debris and trapped bacteria from the fissures and crevices of the tongue. This will significantly reduce the production of volatile sulfur compounds which are the main cause of oral malodor.

Will I get the same benefits or results using over the counter
remedies or products?

Probably not. It is very important for patients to receive
professional instructions when addressing halitosis. As a dental
professional we can review the oral health and history of our patients
to determine the source of the halitosis, and then to provide the proper
treatment and protocol.

What can be done about chipped teeth?
Don't let chipped or ground-down teeth stand in the way of your perfect smile. Even small chips can have a big impact on your appearance. Porcelain veneers can be applied to cover the chip or the smaller damaged areas can be rebuilt with plastic bonding. An acrylic material forms a strong bond with your tooth and is shaped and colored to blend naturally with your smile.

What are porcelain veneers?
One of the best ways to improve the look of your smile is with porcelain veneers. Tooth-colored porcelain material is shaped to fit over and bond to your existing teeth. Chipped teeth, gaps, and other unsightly features can be effectively hidden from view. Because they actually form a permanent bond with your teeth, porcelain veneers are long lasting as well as attractive. Dr. Hajji uses an internationally acclaimed laboratory to help him create beautiful, natural-looking veneers custom designed for each individual. We prefer LUMINEERS BY CERINATE, over porcelain veneers, because they are painless and most importantly they don't require removal of painful tooth structure. Dr. Hajji will apply these contact lens-thin “smile shapers” to teeth without any grinding or shaving, transforming misshapen, worn teeth into a naturally beautiful smile that looks perfect for every individual. LUMINEERS can even be placed on porcelain bridgework and crowns with the new Revitalize Kit available from your dentist. LUMINEERS BY CERINATE is the best of both worlds – ultra-thin, yet super strong for a radiant smile that resists any cracking, which can damage restorations. LUMINEERS are completely reversible. My gums show a lot when I smile. Can this be fixed?

Should my old fillings be replaced?
In most cases, absolutely not, however older silver fillings may have recurrent decay or open/leaking margins which leads to bacterial leakage and tooth decay, increasing the need for emergency dental care and root canals. New fillings are made from modern materials that don't expand and are in most cases stronger than metal fillings. Also, new fillings match the color of your teeth for a more flattering look

Pros and Cons of a composite resin fillings

Advantages:

The composite of composite resin fillings bonds to further support the remaining tooth structure, which helps prevent breakage and damage to your tooth. They certainly look better, and are color blended to match your natural tooth color. These fillings are often used to improve the appearance of misshapen, chipped or discolored teeth. Composite resin fillings last about six to twelve years or more, and the procedure usually takes just one visit to your dentist. The dentist won't need to drill as much of the tooth structure as with amalgam fillings.

Disadvantages:

Composite fillings require more time to apply than amalgam fillings. This results in an increased cost for placing composite fillings. Most insurance will provide better coverage for the less expensive amalgam filling.

What is Bonding typically used for?
Bonding is a tooth-colored composite resin (similar to an enamel) that is bonded to the tooth surface to repair and/or change the color or shape of a tooth, then sculpted into shape, hardened, and polished. When teeth are chipped or slightly decayed, bonded composite resins may be the material of choice. Bonding also makes a great tooth colored filling for small cavities and broken or chipped surfaces. It can also be used to close spaces between teeth. Additionally, it is used to cover the entire outside surface of a tooth to change its color and shape.

What can be done for missing teeth?
Bridges are designed to replace missing teeth. Not only do they fill the unsightly spaces left by lost teeth, but they also help support the teeth adjacent to, and directly opposite, the missing teeth. Often a dentist will recommend an Implant to fill in the space as well.

How can jagged teeth be corrected?
In some instances, simple reshaping (contouring) of the front teeth, even without anesthesia, may produce a dramatic result to correct jagged, chipped or slightly uneven teeth. The cosmetic dentist simply utilizes sanding discs and creativity, to create a natural look with existing teeth.

I was told that I have a weak biting surface, what can be done?
Crowns are used when making cosmetic improvements to the teeth is the goal, and serve an additional purpose. A crown is placed over a tooth, replacing most of its enamel. It surrounds the tooth, giving it strength and providing a strong, durable biting surface.

What are Porcelain and Ceramic Inlays?
Porcelain inlays are considered durable, with a manufacturing process that enables a high degree of accuracy in placing the inlay. Porcelain inlays bind onto the tooth and increase the overall strength of the tooth. These inlays may cost more than other types of filling procedures. Ceramic inlays are used to repair somewhat damaged back teeth. They are made of very strong and durable industrial ceramics. Glued into place with special adhesives, they hold the damaged parts of the tooth together. These inlays are quiet durable, and look exactly like a tooth in every way. They are also significantly stronger than regular filling materials.

I have Porcelain Laminate Veneers, why are they so special?
Many times, the demands of cosmetic changes in the mouth are too great for simple bonding. This is when porcelain laminate veneers may be used. Porcelain veneers (sometimes referred to as laminates) can change an entire smile. Porcelain laminate veneers are quick, relatively painless, and dramatic. They can change shape, color, size, and arrangement of teeth or any combination of these factors. They can be used as an alternative for orthodontic treatment. The best part about porcelain laminate veneers is that they can be placed in two visits. If you have been thinking about veneers as ask about the new and exciting introduction of Lumineers by Cerinate. LUMINEERS BY CERINATE is painless because they don't require removal of painful tooth structure. Dentists apply these contact lens-thin “smile shapers” to teeth without any grinding or shaving, transforming misshapen, worn teeth into a naturally beautiful smile that looks perfect for every individual. LUMINEERS can even be placed on porcelain bridgework and crowns with the new Revitalize Kit available from your dentist. When are Porcelain Jackets recommended?
When there is not enough tooth structure left, or the chewing demands in the mouth are too great for laminates, a stronger, more extensive restoration is needed. In this case, porcelain jacket crowns are used. Porcelain jackets are pure porcelain crowns placed on a fully prepared tooth. They are the most life-like of all full crown type restorations.

What if Porcelain Jackets are not enough?
When biting pressure is too great for porcelain jackets, teeth are loose due to periodontal disease, or gaps from missing teeth must be filled in, metal alloy must be placed under the porcelain for strength. This is the porcelain fused to metal crown technique. More tooth structure is removed to accommodate both metal and porcelain. Once an impression is taken, a metal coping is made on the prepared tooth. This is then covered with porcelain. Porcelain fused to metal crowns do not have the translucency of pure porcelain crowns. However, a talented ceramist with experience in custom staining can usually overcome this limitation. When individual back teeth are broken down but some good healthy tooth structure remains, porcelain fused to gold inlays are used. This is the strongest and longest lasting back teeth restoration procedure. Once the tooth is properly prepared, the technique is similar to the porcelain fused to metal crown technique. The benefit of this restoration is the advantage of gold underneath which supports the tooth during heavy biting, therefore protecting the tooth and the nerve.

Who is a candidate for a root canal?
If your tooth is infected or there's severe damage to the pulp, a root canal will be recommended. An untreated cavity is the most common cause for this infection. The pulp inside the tooth can become inflamed from trauma or extensive restorative work. It can even be affected from a series of fillings being applied in a short period of time. This inflammation usually leads to infection. Pain in the tooth is the most common and obvious symptom.

What are Root Canals?
There are tiny canals within your tooth that may become infected. This leads to the pulp inside your tooth also becoming infected as well. Your dentist will remove the infection by performing a root canal procedure. The canals are cleaned and then sealed/filled and the tooth receives either a filling or in most cases a crown. Biocalex being our choice for sealing the canals.
